Frequently Asked questions
Is acupuncture painful?
No, acupuncture should never hurt because the sterile needles we use are incredibly fine, much thinner than the needles used for blood tests and vaccines. Most people say they don’t feel the needles go in. We tell people to expect to feel a dull tingle or heavy sensation, and this means that the needles are doing their work.
Is acupuncture safe?
Providing you choose a practitioner who is a full member of our governing body, the British Acupuncture Council then you are in good hands. I am a licensed member of the BAcC and have completed 3700 hours of degree level training which included anatomy, physiology and biomedicine courses. My final year was spent working in a clinic on Old Street in London for 400 hours under close supervision where my needling skills and safe practice were continuously assessed.
What do I need to do before a treatment?
Please ensure that you haven’t drunk alcohol, are hydrated and have eaten a meal a couple of hours before your session with me.
What should I wear?
I want you to be as comfortable as possible during your treatment so it’s best to wear loose clothing if you can, to easily uncover your lower legs and arms. Sometimes you’ll need to remove or lower an item of clothing but your privacy is respected and you will always be covered up with a towel.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes, many women have acupuncture to support them through their pregnancy and to help them manage morning sickness, nausea and fatigue. There is now good evidence that acupuncture and moxa can help to turn a breech baby, reducing the need for medical intervention and supporting natural labour. It is also very helpful post-partum with urinary issues and breastfeeding. After 40 weeks, acupuncture can be used to encourage the natural onset of labour.
How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
Your treatment plan is completely unique to you and varies hugely from person to person but as a guideline you should start to feel improvements in 3-6 sessions. Sometimes it can work very quickly but everyone is different. When I have taken your case history I will recommend a course of treatment to suit you and your condition.
