Acupuncture for Anxiety: Taking A Natural Approach to Relieving Stress and Improving Mental Health
In the last few years, stress and anxiety have become an epidemic, affecting more than 8 million people at any one time in the UK according to Mental Health UK. With increasing workloads, financial pressures, and demanding busy lifestyles, it is no wonder that so many of us are struggling to cope and are looking for alternative ways to improve our mental health.
The Need for Alternative Approaches: Acupuncture to Manage Anxiety
While there are treatment options like therapy and medication available for anxiety and stress, they may not always provide immediate relief or come without potential side effects. Fortunately, a growing body of research suggests that acupuncture can be an effective alternative therapy for managing anxiety, promoting relaxation, and restoring a sense of calm in your life.
Scientific Research Supporting Acupuncture for Anxiety
Recent scientific research supports the effectiveness of acupuncture for anxiety, and it performs well in trials using medication as a control. Studies have shown positive outcomes and significant improvements in anxiety symptoms among those receiving acupuncture treatments.
Exploring the Mechanisms of Acupuncture for Anxiety Management
The mechanisms of action behind acupuncture for anxiety management involve a complex range of physiological responses in the body. By inserting acupuncture needles into the body we can elicit specific responses which:
increase the production of your body’s own natural opioids which can in turn increase feelings of contentment and relaxation
stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms
create changes in different parts of the brain which are responsible for how we experience emotions, including anxiety.
All of these responses enhance each other to alleviate anxiety symptoms, with the maximum benefit felt over a course of consecutive acupuncture treatments.
Positive Feedback from My Patients: Acupuncture to Support Relaxation
The feedback from my patients regarding acupuncture for anxiety is overwhelmingly positive. Many of them come to me saying they feel unable to relax and wind down and feel ‘tired but wired’ all the time and many are desperate to find an alternative to pharmaceuticals that will help them. In my experience, acupuncture not only provides immediate relief but also accumulates long-term benefits with repeated sessions.
Long-term Relief from Stress and Anxiety
It is worth emphasising that the benefits of acupuncture for anxiety build up over time with repeated sessions. The insertion of the fine needles during acupuncture works to stimulate the autonomic nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic branch which is responsible for the "rest and repair" response in the body. This activation of the parasympathetic mode is what promotes deep relaxation, reduces stress levels, and facilitates the body's natural healing processes. As a result, patients experience a steady improvement in their overall well-being and a reduction in anxiety symptoms with each subsequent acupuncture session and start to feel better able to cope with the stressors in their life.
Integrating Acupuncture with Existing Anxiety Treatments
One of the significant advantages of acupuncture is its minimal side effects compared to many medications. There is a very small chance of bruising with acupuncture, or occasionally bleeding, but these are very mild and short-lived. In contrast, while prescription drugs can be very effective, they may carry significant physical and mental side effects and do sometimes come with a risk of dependency. If you are taking medication and have a diagnosis it is safe to have acupuncture alongside these, and doctors are increasingly aware of the benefits of a course of acupuncture.
Improving Sleep Quality and Overall Well-being with Acupuncture
Patients who have come to see me for acupuncture for anxiety often tell me they enjoy better sleep and an improved sense of well-being after just a few sessions. Sleeping better and more deeply is associated with great improvements in mental health and achieving this is a key part of what we will work on together.
What can I expect from my treatment plan?
If you would like to work with me to reduce your anxiety, alongside acupuncture I offer you personalised nutritional and lifestyle advice. As part of your treatment I will spend time with you discussing the stressors in your life and looking at how you can reduce the impact they are having on you.
Typically, you can expect a course of acupuncture treatments to last 8-12 weeks and depending on the severity of your symptoms when I first see you, you may need to attend twice weekly for two or three weeks until we see solid improvement. Once you are feeling better able to cope and more ‘on top’ of everything again we will reduce your treatments to every two weeks then once a month.
